1. get an A for effort : to give recognition for a one's effort, even if they were not successful

- Though John's project did not win any prizes at the science fair, everyone who saw it gave him an A for effort. He had put in hours of work.

 

2. flunk out : to fail a course, or fail school

- The teacher was very disappointed with Quinton for failing his test. She scolded him and said that he would flunk out of school if he was not more diligent.

 

3. call the roll : to call  the names of the students

- At the beginning of each class the teacher calls the roll to make sure all her students are in attendance. 

 

4. draw a blank : to not know the answer or to have forgotten the answer

- Even though juile knew the material well, she drew a blank when the teacher asked her a question

 

5. hit the books : begin to study hard

- After soccer practice Todd knew it was time to hit the books if hr wanted to do well on his math test the next day.

 

6. goof off : waste time or behave inappropriately

- The sutdents were scolded by their teacher for goof off while she was out of the room.

 

7. show of hands : to rise hands in a classroom or meeting to determine what the people in a group are thinking

- The teacher asked for a show of hands to find out how many students had already finished their work.

 

 

 get an A for effort 노력에 대해 인정받다, flunk out 퇴학당하다, 낙제하다, call the roll 출석을 부르다

 draw a blank 답을모르거나 잊어버리다 , hit the books 열심히 공부하다,

 goof off 시간을허비하다, 농땡이치다, show of hands 손을들어보이다
